STAROFFICE 5.2 APPLICATION SUITE
StarOffice Writer

The StarOffice Writer application enables you to accomplish a variety of tasks, from creating straightforward business letters and documentation to desktop publishing. Powerful Auto Functions help you focus on your ideas, not on your keyboard. Flexible layout and design options make it a snap to create multi column newsletters and brochures. ophisticated indexing functions help define bibliographical and index entries and keywords as well as generate indexes and reference tables (such as a table of contents). Powerful groupware functions make it easy to collaborate with others on the same document, while keeping track of everybody's input. Publishing your own home page or updating intranet pages is as simple as writing a document. Even if you don't know HTML, you can create sophisticated Web pages with hyperlinks, frames, and image maps. Whether you want to create a Web page, design a brochure, or collaborate with others on the same document, StarOffice Writer software is the perfect tool for the job.

New and improved features include:

  • NEW index dialog box: Increase the usefulness of your long, complex documents. StarOffice Writer 5.2 software now offers a dialog for indexes and reference tables that simplifies generating a table of contents or indexing terms, bibliographical references, illustrations, tables, and other objects. The tabs
    include:

  • Index provides a quick summary of all available index types and includes a host of context sensitive formatting options, depending on the index type selected in the Type drop-down list box. Options include Table of Contents, Alphabetical Index, Illustration Index, Index of Tables, User-Defined, Table of Objects, and Bibliography. If you select the Show Preview option, the type of index to be inserted is previewed on the left side of the dialog box

  • Entries enables you to control the individual parts and attributes of index entries, including chapter number, entry text, and page number

  • Styles enables you to assign and edit paragraph styles for individual index entry levels

  • Columns and Background enable you to define multicolumn indexes and specify a background color or graphic for your index or reference table

To open the Insert Index dialog, select Insert > Indexes > Indexes.

  • NEW Bibliography database: Now you can identify the source of a quote or excerpt, and append a list of books and other references to your documents. The bibliography is a database, stored with the text document, that can be used to create corresponding indexes. To insert a bibliographical entry, select Insert > Indexes > Bibliography Entry. In the Insert Bibliography Entry dialog, select an entry from the existing database or document content. If a corresponding entry does not exist, click the New button to create a new entry in the Define Bibliography Entry dialog box. You can also fill in assorted bibliographical details such as author, title, publisher, and so on. When specifying a bibliography entry, you may distinguish between magazines, books, e-mails, research reports, and more. In each case, use the Entries tab of the Insert Index dialog box to define the structure and attributes for later display of the entries when you are inserting or editing the bibliography list.

  • NEW option to use concordance file for Alphabetical Indexes: Streamline your indexing efforts by using any ASCII-file as concordance; all you need is a well-defined structure to identify search strings, alternative texts (for the display), as well as primary and secondary keys for main and subentries. Whenever the index is generated or updated by a concordance, the text of the document is searched for the entries that are defined in the concordance file, and an index is automatically generated out of the strings found in the document. When using this option, you do not need to define the entries manually for every document.

  • NEW Business card templates: StarOffice software makes it easier than ever to create and print your own business cards. The Business Card item on the File > New menu enables you to choose from a variety of predefined designs for your personal and business use. The dialog box is based on the Labels function (which has been moved from the Insert to the File > New menu); your personal and business data is based on the signature files defined in the AutoText modules and may be edited using the Private and Business tabs of the new dialog box.

  • Enhanced update feature for charts: Update multiple charts with a click of your mouse. In previous versions of StarOffice software, you had to place the cursor inside a table and press F9 to update an existing chart. The StarOffice Writer 5.2 application includes an All Charts item on the Tools > Update menu that enables you to update all charts in the current document at once. Alternatively, you may select Update All from the Update menu, in which case all existing fields, links, indexes, and charts are updated.

  • Improved and extended layout and formatting options for text documents: Create professionally designed documents with new layout and formatting options that make it easier to:

    * Add columns and color to sections

    * Create intricate layouts with interlaced sections

    * Use footnotes and endnotes in sections

    * Insert and manage columns

    * Format footnotes and endnotes

    * Align tables horizontally (which improves the import and export of Microsoft Word documents)

  • Improved handling of columns: The StarOffice Writer 5.2 user interface has been changed to make the handling of objects containing columns more transparent:

    * The NEW Insert Section button replaces the old Insert Frame button on the Insert toolbar, enabling you to quickly insert single or multicolumn sections. Simply click the button and then drag to the right to select the number of columns from the pop-up menu

    * Insert Frame button (first button from the left) now enables you to insert single or multicolumn frames with the mouse

    * New Columns item on the Format menu opens the Columns dialog box. Using this command, you can define columns for the current page template or selection (section, frame, or text). If the selection consists of text, the program will insert a new section with the specified number of columns

  • AutoCorrect option: By assigning a keystroke shortcut, you can quickly insert frames, graphics, or OLE objects. For example, this option enables you to quickly insert a graphic of a scanned signature into a letter, then e-mail the signed document as an attachment.

  • Enhanced AutoComplete feature: Speed up your text entry with the AutoComplete feature. It enables you to store a predefined number of words of a predefined length. The program will match these words against the string of characters you enter, and make suitable suggestions that you may accept or ignore while typing. StarOffice Writer 5.2 software introduces the Word Completion tab in the AutoCorrect dialog box. Using this tab, you may collect and edit a list of suggestions, control the appearance and behavior of this feature, and select a key to use for accepting the current suggestion.

  • Improved import and export filters for Microsoft Word 97/2000 documents: Save complex documents that contain bookmarks, OLE objects, drawing objects, fields, hyperlinks, notes, references, and more as Microsoft Word 97/2000-compatible files. The major areas of improvement for the Microsoft Word 97/2000 import and export filters are:
