A powerful data management
tool that is fully integrated across StarOffice software, StarOffice
Base enables you to create catalogs with database fields, manage
contact information and mail merges with ease, and produce and
save reports as StarOffice Writer documents as well as conventional
database objects. Besides using it to create relational databases,
you can also employ this module as a front end for client-server
relational databases on all platforms, or to import, create,
store, and manage data with drag-and-drop data import and export,
form creation, and table consolidation. |
New and improved features
include:
- Enhanced database
functionality and user interface: Create and manage a database.
StarOffice Base 5.2 software integrates the Adabas D Database
with a new, easier-to-use interface, and enables you to import
and export HTML and RTF formats.
- NEW Adabas D database
engine: Replaces
the former Oterro database. Adabas D is a high-performance, multithreaded,
database management system specially designed for complex, enterprise
information requirements. By combining ease of administration
with high performance, Adabas D is an ideal database system for
business-critical applications in client-server environments.
In fact, the outstanding features of Adabas D have prompted software
vendors to offer a wide range of standard and industry-specific
solutions based on this RDBMS. To log on to this database, select
the Adabas D entry from the Database Type drop-down list box in
the Properties of dialog box. Note: Databases based
on the former StarOffice Base Oterro engine format can easily
be converted to Adabas.
- NEW
ADO (ActiveX Data Objects) interface: Use StarOffice Base
as a front end for all databases that support ADO, such as Microsoft
Access 2000, Oracle, and several SQL servers. The combination
of ADO interface and OLE DB Providers enables you to access all
kinds of data, regardless of data location or format.
- Support for Escape
sequences for ODBC and JDBC: Improved compatibility for ODBC
and JDBC drivers. Some of these drivers (such as Adabas) do not
support the key word OUTER JOIN. As a workaround, you can use
the corresponding Escape sequence.
- Support for ODBC
3 standard:
StarOffice Base 5.2 software supports database drivers based on
the ODBC 3 standard. The extension to the ODBC 3 standard ensures
better, more wide-ranging support of ODBC databases.
- Improved import and
export of HTML and RTF data: Makes it easier to copy tables with
drag-and-drop ease:
* To export a database table into an HTML or RTF file, you may
select the table to be copied and drag it with the mouse into
the document opened on the desktop while holding the Shift key.
When exporting the data, all attributes of the original table
are adopted, provided that the format of the target document supports
them
* You may also import tables from an HTML or RTF file. When selecting
the table range in the HTML or RTF document and dragging the selection
onto a table container, a wizard pops up that guides you through
the creation of the database in three simple steps
* You may also import HTML or RTF-formatted data using the clipboard.
This enables you to import data from Microsoft Excel or Access
directly. To copy data from Microsoft Excel, select the range
of the spreadsheet to be copied, then choose the Insert command
in the context menu of a StarOffice table container. A wizard
pops up to help you specify the import options
- Enhanced database
Beamer for tables and queries offers these features:
* NEW Apply Filter button on the
table view toolbar makes it easy to switch to the parent folder
* Table field descriptions (which are entered in the Table Design
view) are displayed as Tip Help when you rest your mouse pointer
over column headers
* NEW buttons on the query design
toolbar make the available options more transparent. The Query
Design object toolbar has four new buttons: Function, Table Name,
Alias Name, and Distinct Values. The first three buttons enable
you to show or hide the corresponding lines in the bottom Query
Design window; the Distinct Values button enables you to define
Select statements
- Extensive ease-of-use
improvements include:
* Automatic adjustment of column width and row height to fit the
font size in tables and queries
* NEW option for creating a new query
with SQL statements using the Enter SQL Statement item on the
context menu of a query or query container
* Relative path support for file-based databases such as Dbase,
Text, StarOffice Base, and Access
* Option to convert queries into tables using drag-and-drop operations.
When you drag a query into the table container, a dialog box appears
that asks you to specify some options for the process
- NEW
Form functionality includes:
* Option to assign a drop-down button to a date field in design
mode
* Option to create forms from templates (select From Template
on the context menu of a form or container)
* Control type for forms called Formatted Field, which is a text
box that has defined formats for input and output
* Filter mode for database form, which enables you to search for
data in the database by using conditions that are more complex
than the usual search function
* AutoComplete for specifying filter conditions. This offers all
possible contents of a field in a combo box
* Datasource as Table button on the navigation toolbar of a form.
This produces a table view of the data that is connected to the
actual form
